National Museum of Korea Launches Its First Permanent Islamic Art Gallery

The National Museum of Korea is set to open its first permanent gallery dedicated to Islamic art, marking a major milestone in celebrating global cultural heritage.

Located on the third floor of the museum’s Permanent Exhibition Hall, the new Islamic Art Gallery will debut with a collaborative exhibition from the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, titled “Islamic Art: A Journey of Splendor.” Running for 11 months, the exhibition showcases 83 remarkable artifacts from Doha, spanning from the 7th to the 19th century.

The gallery is thoughtfully organized into three sections: religious art, cultural exchange, and Islamic courtly art and manuscripts. Visitors will encounter Quran manuscripts, mosque lamps, prayer carpets, astrolabes, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and even media art recreations of historical spaces, such as the “Reception Room of a Nobleman in Damascus.”

Designed with an octagonal layout and domed roof, the gallery offers an immersive experience that celebrates the beauty, sophistication, and historical depth of Islamic art, fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

This initiative highlights the museum’s commitment to global artistic traditions and promoting cultural dialogue across continents.
