Supporting farmers remains central to sustaining viable markets and strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural backbone. Reinforcing this commitment, the Lagos State Government has announced that the second phase of the ‘Ounje Eko’ Farmers’ Subsidy Programme will be launched before the end of November.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, described the initiative as one of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s strategic interventions to boost food production, empower farmers, and stabilise food prices, especially as the festive season approaches.
Olusanya noted that over 5,000 farmers benefited from Phase I, launched earlier this year, a milestone that confirmed the programme’s effectiveness and impact. Building on this achievement, Governor Sanwo-Olu has approved the rollout of Phase II, which will broaden its scope to reach more farmers across different agricultural value chains.
To ensure transparency and accountability, participation will continue to be restricted to recognised and registered farmer groups, including the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter (PAN-LAG), the Lagos State Catfish Allied Farmers Association of Nigeria (LASCAFAN), and Farm Estate and Settlement Associations.
As Lagos deepens its investment in farmer-focused interventions, a broader national conversation emerges:
Should other state governments across Nigeria replicate this model to strengthen farmer support nationwide, or would a more tailored, state-specific approach to agricultural challenges deliver better results?
