Kano Government Tightens Rules on Surveys and Data Collection

The Kano State Government has instructed all organisations, NGOs, and individual researchers to get official approval from the Kano State Bureau of Statistics before carrying out any surveys or censuses in the state.

Auwalu Ya’u, Director of Field Service (Census and Survey), said the move is in line with the Kano State Bureau of Statistics Law of 2014 and recent directives from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government. The aim, he explained, is to ensure proper coordination and maintain consistent standards across all data collection efforts.

“No survey or census can take place in Kano without the Bureau’s prior involvement,” the statement stressed. Organisations planning research are expected to notify the Bureau in advance, obtain written consent, and work closely with its staff on survey design, sampling, and data processing.

Final reports must also be submitted to the Bureau for review before publication. Ya’u said the measure will improve the quality and reliability of data used for planning and decision-making in the state.

With stricter oversight now in place, the question is: will these regulations help improve data integrity, or could they slow down research and community projects in Kano?
