Terrorist Group Claims Responsibility for Borno Ambush, Alleges Killing of Senior Officer Amid Military Denial
A fresh wave of uncertainty surrounds the ambush on security personnel in Borno State, with insurgents claiming they killed Brigadier General M. Uba despite the Nigerian Army’s firm denial.
The attack occurred on Friday along Damboa Road, near Wajiroko, where a military convoy transporting equipment was intercepted. According to field reports, the terrorists opened fire on soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), triggering an intense exchange of gunfire.
The attackers reportedly seized at least 17 military motorcycles. Two CJTF members and two soldiers were confirmed dead during the confrontation.
Shortly after the incident, rumours circulated that General Uba had been captured by the insurgents. However, Army spokesperson Onyechi Anele refuted those claims, stating that the general led his troops with “decisive firepower,” compelling the attackers to retreat. She added that Uba returned safely to base. A video later surfaced showing the general asserting he was alive and still in command.
Despite this, new reports now allege that the terrorist group executed the senior officer after capturing him, a claim that directly contradicts the military’s account and deepens public concern over the true state of security in the region.
The conflicting narratives raise a troubling national question: If top-ranking military officers are increasingly vulnerable, how protected are the ordinary citizens living in these conflict-prone areas?
